Systems, automation and AI

Systems, automation and practical AI.

Most businesses run on systems that do not talk to each other, and on people re-keying data between them. I connect what you already have, automate the repetitive work, and use AI where it genuinely helps, with the security to match.

When to call

When the business runs on workarounds.

  • Data typed in twice.

Orders, customers and invoices are copied between systems by hand, with the errors and delays that come with it.

  • Spreadsheets doing a system’s job.

Critical processes live in spreadsheets that one person understands and nobody wants to touch.

  • Systems that do not connect.

The website, the shop, the warehouse and the accounts each hold part of the picture, and none of them agree.

  • Curious about AI, unsure where to start.

You can see the potential, but want honest advice on where it pays off, and where it would just add risk.

  • A website or portal that has outgrown itself.

It was fine at the start. Now it is slow, hard to change, and holding back what the business wants to do online.

  • Worried about data and security.

Customer data, AI tools and third-party services need to be used without creating new security or GDPR problems.

What I do

Joined-up systems, less manual work.

  • Systems integration

Connect your website, shop, CRM, warehouse and accounts through APIs, so data flows once and stays consistent.

  • Process automation

Replace repetitive manual steps and fragile spreadsheets with automated workflows that people can rely on.

  • Practical AI

Use AI where it genuinely saves time or improves decisions, designed with clear controls over data and human review.

  • Websites, portals and backends

Customer portals, booking and member sites, and the backend services behind them, built to be secure and easy to run.

  • Data and reporting

One reliable view of the numbers that matter, instead of reports stitched together by hand each month.

  • Security built in

Access control, encryption, audit logs and sensible use of third-party tools, designed in from the start.

Experience

Where I have done this before.

  • Founder, secure SaaS

    Inheritable

    Founder, architect and engineer

Designed, built and launched an encrypted life planner on the web, iOS, Android and as a browser extension. Row-level security, layered encryption and an independent penetration test, built quickly with AI and coding agents under my own security review.

  • eCommerce

    Real Food Source

    Systems consultant since 2016

Built the hosting on AWS, moved it to Azure, and in 2024 migrated the store to Shopify. Look after IT operations, security, maintenance and upgrades for a business with more than 100,000 customers.

  • Logistics

    Royal Mail

    Solutions Architect

Built working Azure Functions to show the business how microservices could shorten time to market and cut costs, and was the specialist on partner integrations, identity and application replacement.

How it starts

Three simple steps.

  1. 01

    A free conversation

30 minutes to tell me what is going on. We work out whether I am the right person to help.

  2. 02

    A short review

I look at your systems, team, suppliers and plans, and give you a clear written view with priorities. For smaller businesses, this is the fixed-price Independent IT Review.

  3. 03

    The right engagement

An advisory retainer, a few days a month, a defined project, or interim cover. Whatever the review shows you need.

Where I am not the right fit.

Being clear about this up front saves us both time.

  • Day-to-day IT support. Fixing individual laptops, printers or passwords. Your IT support company is better placed for that, and I can help you get more from them.
  • A developer by the day. Hands-on work, yes, but as part of owning the outcome, not as an extra pair of hands without the senior responsibility.
  • Equity-only roles. Work paid only in shares. I am happy to talk about how an engagement is structured, but partial ownership is a long-term route, not a consulting one.
  • Rubber-stamping. Signing off a decision that has already been made. If I think it is the wrong call, I will say so.
  • Technology for its own sake. AI, a rebuild or a new platform where a simpler, cheaper option would do the job just as well.
FAQ

Common questions.

Do you build it yourself, or just advise?

Both. I design the approach, and I am hands-on with the build: integrations, automation, backends and websites. For larger pieces I can lead and review the work of other developers.

Is it safe to use AI with our business data?

It can be, with the right controls: knowing what data goes where, limiting access, and keeping a person in the loop for decisions that matter. I built Inheritable, a service holding very private records, with AI-assisted development under my own security review.

Will automation replace our staff?

That is rarely the aim. The usual goal is to take the repetitive, error-prone work away, so your people spend their time on customers and judgement instead of copying data.

Which tools do you use?

Whatever fits the job and your existing systems. Recently that includes AI coding agents, Cloudflare, Supabase and Postgres, Azure Functions and Logic Apps, APIs and webhooks, and platforms such as Shopify.
