The things I do for fun.
Most of what I enjoy outside work has the same shape as the work itself: a real technical problem, a bit of risk to manage, and something built or fixed at the end of it. Here is a little of that.
Flying, skiing and travel.

Flying
I am a private pilot. I gained my licence in sixteen days: forty-two hours in the air, seven written exams and the flight test. I have flown around the UK and over to the continent many times.

Building an aeroplane
I have rebuilt microlights, worked on the British Microlight Aircraft Association council and I am now building a metal two-seat kit aircraft, with the long-term aim of flying it around the world.

Drones
Drone flying for aerial photography and video, a natural extension of a lifelong interest in anything that flies. My images were recently used in a public inquiry as evidence.

Skiing
For over 15 years, a keen skier and before that a snowboarder. Next on the list is learning to paraglide, and combining the two.

Travel
More than fifty countries so far, with plenty more planned. I am usually the first to volunteer to drive, especially abroad. I love an adventure holiday.

Water and wheels
Jet skiing, sailing, snow mobiles, go-karts and motorbikes. If it is fast and slightly noisy, I am probably interested.
Smaller things I have built.

CAD design
Designing in CAD, from parts and enclosures to buildings and garden offices, and plenty of pieces for the aircraft.

3D printing
Printing parts, prototypes and fixes, often straight from my own CAD designs.

Small websites
Small websites for friends, family and smaller businesses, built quickly and kept simple, secure and easy to look after.
